The conference is devoted to investigating the dynamics of inequality in China in terms of the production and the transmission of inequalities in a rapidly changing environment. Over the last decade, the emergence of new markets (housing and capital markets in particular) and the increased mobility of factors (including the massive flows of rural migrants to cities) have created new sources of inequalities in China that are likely to strongly influence the persistence of inequality.

The conference will focus on these new sources of inequalities through the following perspectives: wealth accumulation and the evolution of inequality, group differences in opportunities and intergenerational mobility. In order to promote innovative discussions on the mechanisms of accumulation of inequality in China, it also aims at offering a perspective that is both comparative across countries and multidisciplinary by bringing together leading French specialists and researchers from Hong Kong and China. The conference is coorganized by School of Humanities and Social Science at HKUST, Centre d’Etudes Francais sur la Chine contemporaine (CEFC), Hong Kong, and GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne, France, with support from Institut français and HKUST IEMS.
