“Xi Jinping thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era” was listed in the amended constitution alongside Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping’s theories after its approval by the Communist Party in China. Xi Jinping is the first Chinese leader after Mao Zedong to leave his mark on the party’s official document.
David Zweig, HKUST IEMS Faculty Associate and Chair Professor at the Social Science Division, expressed his opinion regarding the news in an article published by NDTV: “The risk is that there’s not as much debate, that people might not be willing to speak out.” He added that it depends on the political environment created by Xi.
