Financial Times: Hong Kong Democracy Movement Loses Ground as China Clamps Down

Financial Times featured Prof David Zweig, IEMS Faculty Associate, Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science and Chair Professor of the Division of Social Science at HKUST, in an article on the 2018 Legislative Council By-election. Prof David Zweig commented on its low turnout, saying Beijing’s “creeping authoritarianism” may have generated a feeling of disillusionment with the democracy movement among Hong Kong people. Meanwhile, SOSC Prof Sing Ming commented on the failing bid of the pan-dem candidate Edward Yiu, saying his agenda failed to appeal to the elderly and grass root voters.
