Prof Jane Zhang’s research “Curriculum and Ideology” quoted on BloombergView


BloombergView’s Cass Sunstein published an article based on the research of IEMS Faculty Associate Jane Zhang detailing the ideology-based curricular reforms in China implemented in 2001, the majority of which were aimed at underscoring the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese-style democracy.

As Professor Zhang’s research demonstrated, “these reforms greatly affect students’ thinking…with students becoming more likely to count the Chinese political system as democratic.” Interestingly, on two issues the curricular reforms failed: namely, “students did not become more favorably disposed toward environmental protection…over economic growth”, and “[the curricular reforms had no] significant change in the attitudes of Han Chinese students…toward minorities.”
