The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) was founded in 1997 with the vision to to establish a premier alliance of research universities as an advisory body to international organisations, governments and business on the development of science and innovation as well as on the broader development of higher education. The vision now encompasses focusing new knowledge on the global challenges affecting the APEC region.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a member of APRU. Prof Albert Park, Director of HKUST IEMS, is the HKUST representative on the APRU Population Ageing Research Hub steering group, which aims to connect leading population ageing experts across the APRU network; to share best practice and showcase research, to engage with governments and industry; and to stimulate new and relevant research collaboration amongst the early career researcher community.
