The Greater Bay Area (GBA) presents significant opportunities for businesses for social and economic development. To make the most of these opportunities, business leaders and policymakers need to understand the dynamics of the labour market in the region, including the factors that influence labour migration, the sectors in which labour migrants work, and the challenges they face.

The Labour Migration at the GBA is a research project in 2021 that aims to understand the mechanism of labour migration and the distribution of human capital among GBA cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Hong Kong.  The project will generate key indicators on employment, migration, and family in these four surveyed cities. 

In this event, Prof Stuart Gietel-Basten, lead of the project, and Jeff Tang, expert in human capital at EY, will share their insights into the region's labour market dynamics, which will be crucial to the region's social and economic development in the coming decades.

This event is part of the HKUST IEMS-EY Emerging Markets Insights series.  It is organised by HKUST IEMS with support from EY.

About the speakers

Stuart Gietel-Basten is Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at HKUST. He is also an IEMS Faculty Associate, Associate Dean (Research) of the School of Humanities and Social Science, and Associate Director of the Leadership and Public Policy Executive Education Program. With his extensive experience and expertise in social science and public policy, Professor Gietel-Basten is well-equipped to lead the Labour Migration at the GBA research project, which aims to understand the labour market dynamics in the Greater Bay Area. Prof Gietel-Basten’s research covers the links between population and policy, with a regional focus on Asia. In particular, he is interested in the emergence of low fertility across the region, and the consequences of this in terms of population ageing and growth. He has been published in a number of major journals in demography and other social science subjects. In 2017, his first book, Why Demography Matters (co-written with Danny Dorling) was published. He is also a regular contributor to the South China Morning Post and China Daily. More >> 

Jeff Tang is Partner, Financial Services Leader, Greater China and ASEAN People Advisory Services at EY.  Jeff leads the People Advisory Services practice for Financial Services clients in the Greater China and ASEAN regions at EY. Based in Hong Kong, he focuses on helping clients deliver their organisations' visions by putting people at the center. He brings an understanding of strategic and functional HR knowledge along with commercial and business acumen to help organizations successfully realise strategic potential and drive tangible results.As a leader, he is also one of EY’s thought leaders in the areas of Executive Remuneration, Performance Management, Talent Management, Workforce Strategy and Transformation. Jeff currently co-chairs EY’s diversity & inclusivity network UNITY, and serves on EY’s global team driving cultural activation for the organization.
