The Pan-African newspaper Mail & Guardian Africa solicited the expert opinion of IEMS’ Barry Sautman on the issue of Chinese migrants in Africa, and whether or not said migrants should be viewed as exploitative or beneficial to local African economies. Such questions are becoming more and more concerning, as anti-China sentiment builds in and around African regions seeing high levels of Chinese investment.

“When it comes to “stealing” or competing for markets, political scientist Barry Sautman noted that worldwide, Chinese exports compete with African exports almost solely in textiles and clothing and China, in fact the Asian country supplies African firms with most of the cloth they need to compete in their main market, the United States.”
