HKUST IEMS co-sponsored the 4th Asian Population Assocation (APA) Conference held on July 11-14, 2018 at Shanghai University, Shanghai, China. The conference, hosted by the Asian Demographic Research Insitute, covered a wide variety of areas in population studies including fertility, mortality, marriage, aging, sexuality, reproductive health, environment, education, migration, and labor force. Methodology and the quality of data was also explored. The Conference was composed of plenary and special sessions, presentations, poster sessions, and pre-/post side meetings.
The Session on Changing Age Structure in Asian was scheduled as a Special Session and was co-sponsored by the APA Study Group on changing age structure in Asia and HKUST Institute of Emerging Market Studies (IEMS).
This session consisted of five presentations by eminent scholars who have contributed to Asian demography and issues over several years.
• Wan He and Loraine A. West: Aging Trends and Patterns Throughout Asia: Now and in the Future
• Dudley L. Poston: The Future Size of the Elderly Populations in East Asian and Implications for Eldercare and the Marriage Market: Mainland China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and North Korea
• Leela Visaria: Determinants of Changing Demographic Structure in Asia: Implications for Future
• Xizhe Peng: Changing Age Structure of Chinese Population and Aging Trends in China
• Stuart Gietel-Basten: Demography Meets Psephology: the Impact of Changing Age Structure on Democratic Systems
The Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) at Shanghai University, together with the China Population Association, Shanghai Population Association, China Population and Development Research Center, Fudan University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Academy of Social Science, and Shanghai Academy joined forces to organize this Conference.
