Industrialisation started in Hong Kong in the 1920’s. However, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that we saw an increase in young women in the workforce driven by increased opportunities in the manufacturing sector (Lee, 2003; Salaff, 1982). In 2023, the percentage of workforce participation for women aged 15 and above in the region was about 52% against 64% for men (Census and Statistics Department, 2024; World Bank Group, 2024). The region has a median monthly wage gap of 6500 HKD between employed men and women (Census and Statistics Department, 2024).
