Naubahar Sharif Joins Panel of Speakers at SCMP’s Redefining Hong Kong Debate Series

Naubahar Sharif, Faculty Associate of IEMS and Associate Professor of Social Science Division at HKUST, was selected to join the panel of distinguished experts of policy makers, innovators, esteemed academics and business leaders as part of SCMP's annual Redefining Hong Kong Debate Series. The event will be held on December 11th 2015, 11:30am to 2:00pm at the JW Marriot Hong Kong Hotel. This year's topic will be "Hong Kong's Emerging Pillar Industries: Innovate Now or Be Left Behind". The context for the debate can be seen below:

Hong Kong is a knowledge-based economy. However, the city suffers from mounting challenges: political stalemate continues as Hong Kong’s election reform plan has been rejected; Hong Kong’s technological innovation is losing ground in comparison to her neighbouring countries; and economic uncertainty looms due to an over-reliance on the four industry pillars. Hong Kong desperately needs a radical shake-up to break the inertia. Is nurturing emerging pillar industries such as cultural and creative industries, innovation and technology; testing and certification services and environmental industries the key solution to propelling economic growth and increasing the City’s competitive edge?

Other panelists include:

  • Allen Ma, CEO of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation
  • Dr. Edmund Lee, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Design Centre
  • Yonden Lhatoo, Senior Editor of the South China Morning Post
