Hiring: Post-doctoral Fellow (Application Deadline: July 25, 2018)

The HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS) seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral Fellow to work on a research project entitled “The Belt and Road Initiative in Southeast Asia”, which is part of a new collaboration between IEMS and the United Overseas Bank. This project will be carried out in conjunction with IEMS’s strategic public policy research project entitled "Trade and Investment under 'One Belt One Road' and Implications for Hong Kong" as supported by HKSAR’s Central Policy Unit.

Working with a team of faculty, post-doctoral fellows and research assistants, the appointee will be responsible for authoring three case studies on Southeast Asian economies (out of a total of six) to analyze how Belt and Road is contributing to trade and investments in the selected countries by showing both country-level dynamics and more specific dynamics of the impacts of the selected Belt and Road investments in the countries.

Major duties of the appointee include:  

  • Contributing original ideas to the framework for the case studies;
  • Finding contacts and organizations of interest in each country proactively;
  • Carrying out interviews with key stakeholders in the selected countries;
  • Performing quantitative analyses on key economic data;
  • Producing three high-quality case studies based on original research; and
  • Presenting the research outputs during events and meetings

Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline with a demonstrated research interest in Southeast Asian countries. Experience in conducting case study research and the ability to communicate in Southeast Asian language(s) and/or Mandarin are desirable. The appointment is expected to commence in August 2018. (Duration: 15 months)
