James Lee, Dean in School of Humanities and Social Science in HKUST, conducted collaborative research regarding the background of elite students in Chinese universities. Some of the findings from this work were published by Jxnews.com.cn in an article describing the features and origin of elites in China’s universities and their families.
According to James Lee’s research, origin of elite students changed over time. Thus, during the 1865-1904 more than 70% of elites were children of government officials. Almost hundred years later during the period of 1994-2014 over 50% of elites were born in middle class families from different regions.
