In order to prevent ethnic violence from happening again, Chinese government decided to start a propaganda campaign around the history of the far western province Xinjinag, mostly populated by Muslim Uygurs.
In the article, published by the South China Morning Post, an IEMS Faculty Associate Barry Sautman expressed his thoughts about the campaign by mentioning that claims that Chinese government exercised jurisdiction over Xinjiang over a long historical period “were made outside the framework of modern conceptions of history.”
