In a recent opinion piece in the South China Morning Post, co-authored by Associate Professor Pengyu Zhu of the Division of Public Policy at HKUST, the authors emphasize the critical need for Hong Kong to adopt sustainable aviation fuel to maintain its status as a global aviation hub. They argue that, with aviation emissions growing rapidly and the urgency of climate change, a comprehensive plan for integrating sustainable fuel is essential. Professor Zhu highlighted that sustainable aviation fuel can significantly reduce carbon emissions, yet its current adoption remains limited. He stressed that Hong Kong must act decisively to enhance sustainable fuel use in the aviation sector to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, especially as competitors like Singapore are already advancing their plans.
