In rural China, it is not uncommon to see 70-year-olds toiling in the fields, writes IEMS Director Albert Park in a Bloomberg article on China’s forgotten elderly. These elderly are the same people who have lived through the Cultural Revolution. Called China’s lost generation, they now may be forgotten as well.
In the article, Director Park points out how rural Chinese spend less on health care as they get older. This is opposite of what happens in other parts of the world.
“So even though older people are getting less healthy in rural China, they are getting less health care,” Park is quoted as saying.
